style: an info dump of things that I've been thinking about
style: 1.0
style- what is it? I personally feel like it's easier to determine was isn't style before finding a definition. it isn't
blinding following trends as they come, it isn't mindlessly dressing in the morning in whatever you grab first, and it's definitely not dressing in the exact same thing as everyone else (not saying I don't love a good twinning moment though).
style is one of the easiest ways to distinguish yourself nowadays, and in my opinion, is an incredibly important part of building self confidence. I personally grew up with a mother who very much subscribed to the "feeling like sh*t doesn't give you an excuse to look like sh*t" and I think that mantra was really engrained in me from a young age. Style is an elevated version of just looking nice, an excellent form of self expression.
I would say up until about college I didn't have a defined style, just kind of a mix and match assortment of things that I liked individually, but I couldn't create an outfit that I was happy with. I am doing a much better now, but I am still working on curating a closet that has pieces that work together, that are cohesive.
something that has really helped me with style (in not only fashion but interior design as well) is Pinterest. Go on there, and start pinning everything that you like. make a board for lounge wear, work outfits, interior design, and even just vibes for an event that you want to plan (think Friendsgiving or planning a birthday party). Then, analyze that sh*t. What elements you are consistently pinning? Are you leaning more towards the clean girl aesthetic? soft girl? are you more into historic buildings or are you grooving into mid mod realness? what elements are unique?
I'm not huge into using critical thought when I don't have to, maybe that's just an indication that I'm less intelligent than the average person, but I enjoy floating through life without thinking about it. usually ignorance is bliss. however, I do care about how I portray myself to the world. and I do in fact want to look put together- so thoughtfulness it is.
When I analyze my own pins, I see a lot of the Swedish/Amsterdam/Copenhagen aesthetic in my fashion, in my home deign there's a bit of an eclectic feel to my pin, there's also an ode to my love of vintage and old things. I like bookcases and brass door knobs. I like straight leg jeans (and own about 5 different pairs) but maybe I should try a looser fit, like the Levi's Dad Jean because I keep seeing them in my boards. I love a button down shirt with a cardigan, but right now I almost exclusively own oversized sweaters and am looking to find a more fitted version.
Outside of a Pinterest analyzation, there are other ways to get some inspiration. consider who are your style icons. For me it's my mom while I was growing up- she's wasn't flashy, but effortlessly cool. She rocked button fly Lucky brand jeans (straight leg ONLY until 2014), simple sweaters or t-shirts, and doc marten loafers that she still pulls out to this day. Outside of Mrs. Hale, I love yuyan (@itsyuyann on insta) or Amanda Edin (@amandaedins on insta). I am a casual dresser, but am trying to learn to embrace my femininity. I want to be intentional but not curated, casual but not constantly wearing loungewear (I am not saying that I don't love a good set but I want to challenge myself to grow). where are you trying to grow in your own wardrobe? what are you saying with your clothes- midwest proud? mom? or trendy little twenty-something making shein work (btw please stop we can tell the quality from a mile away, if it's what you can afford no shame, but if you just want a huge closet with massive options, I beg of you- PLEASE DO BETTER).
anyway, these are obviously just my opinions and you can dress however and in whatever that you want. I am no Joan Rivers, but... I do have my thoughts. I'm sorry for the lack of pictures, but this was more of a think-piece rather than a show and tell. I think that this a great starting off point- I am so excited to grow my closet with you!!
love,
